The differences between a fiber optic handpiece and a self illuminate handpiece:
A fiber optic handpiece gets light from the fiber optic circuit board inside the dental unit. (the circuit board transform electricity to light)
A self illuminate handpiece has an electric generator inside, which transform air power to electricity and to light.
So, a fiber optic handpiece requires the dental unit to be equipped with fiber optic circuit board and 5/6 hole hose.
However, a self illuminate handpiece doesn't need those things, its fitting is like a normal handpiece, which attaches to a normal 4 hole or 2 hole hose.
If you have a 5 hole or 6 hole fiber optic handpiece, you can attach it to a 4 hole hose directly, and use it only as a normal handpiece without light, because a 4 hole hose means no light from the dental unit in the first place.
But if you have a self illuminate handpiece, you can attach it to a 4 hole hose directly and use it as a handpiece with light.
