The research project sponsored by the China Hepatitis Prevention and Control Foundation and the Chinese Medical Association Liver Diseases Branch and funded by GlaxoSmithKline has been launched in 36 hospitals in 21 provinces, municipalities and 26 cities nationwide since April this year. The aim is to understand the current status of oral antiviral therapy for patients with hepatitis B and the reasons for their long-term antiviral treatment compliance; to lay the foundation for the development of doctors and patients and public education strategies for hepatitis B antiviral therapy in the next decade. The survey lasted more than two months and involved 10,000 hepatitis B patients nationwide.
The survey results show that patients still have three major problems in the course of treatment, follow-up and economy for anti-viral treatment of hepatitis B. The awareness of anti-viral treatment for hepatitis B patients still needs to be improved. According to reports, the problems found in the investigation are mainly reflected in the lack of correct understanding of patients' antiviral treatment. The treatment expectation of most patients is too high, and a considerable number of patients do not know the course of treatment; quite a number of patients are not clear about the criteria for withdrawal. Economic factors have a greater impact on patient compliance, and 12% of dressing patients change their medications because they cannot afford to stay in the economy. A significant proportion of patients were unable to follow standardized follow-up, and 19% of patients did not detect changes in viral load at follow-up.
