The 3D bioprinter developed by scientists at the Wallenberg Wood Science Center in Sweden can produce cartilage. The ink used in this 3D printer contains human cells.

According to the Hezhong News Agency, on Wednesday, scientists presented this breakthrough technology in the field of bio-printing at the 251st National Conference and Expo of the American Chemical Society.

Cartilage is the joint tissue of the nose, ears and joints. Since the cartilage cannot be healed after being damaged by disease or injury, only the replacement of the damaged cartilage can solve the problem.

Previous efforts to make cartilage using bio-ink have been lost, because the cartilage produced quickly loses its structural integrity. But the bio-ink used in this latest study allows the cells used to make the cartilage to remain structural, ensuring that the printed nose, ears, and joints are shaped.

Paul Gatenholm, head of the latest research, said that Three-dimensional bioprinting is a disruptive technology that is expected to revolutionize tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The research team hopes to work with plastic surgeons to create cartilage to repair damage caused by trauma or cancer. Future 3D printers are likely to use the patient's own cells as bio-ink to create cartilage that can repair its own problems.

After demonstrating the structural integrity of bio-ink, scientists have successfully implanted artificial cartilage into experimental mice, and the implanted cells survived and successfully grow more cartilage.

In the future, scientists will also mix bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells with bio-ink to promote the growth of larger chondrocytes. Although there is still much research to be done, scientists hope to test this latest technology in the human body as soon as possible.
