Scientists have reportedly found key factors in age-related memory loss, and it is expected that new drugs will be developed to reverse the process.

Researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have received strong evidence that age-related memory loss is different from pre-Alzheimer's disease and may be cured. The researchers found this key factor by comparing the brains of young and old people, all of which were found to be neurotic in the death of donors.

They found that certain genes in the hippocampus of the brain memory center stopped working when they were old, resulting in the loss of key proteins.

This brain structure is called the dentate gyrus, and scientists have long suspected that it is susceptible to age. This part of the structure is a different area adjacent to the onset and formation of Alzheimer's disease.

There is indirect evidence that the loss of RbAp48 protein causes memory loss in the elderly. Therefore, the researchers observed that the loss of this protein in mice caused the same amnesia as humans.

In order to find sufficient evidence, the same memory loss symptoms as the young mice occurred when the protein level of young rats was reduced.

More interestingly, the process is reversible, and when the level of the protein in older mice is increased, the memory of older rats returns to a younger level. The results have been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Eric Kandel, a Nobel laureate leader at Columbia University's research team, said: "This is by far the best evidence that age-related memory loss is different from early Alzheimer's disease. Some people have this protein. The level has remained at a young level so there is no cognitive delay. This raises another question. Is memory loss normal aging or worsening, can we prevent it from happening?"

The team also said that this is only the early stage of research, and there is still much work to be done in the next step. Scientists have learned that training can make the dentate gyrus function better, and others are studying whether nutrients can maintain their function in the form of teeth.
