Potential new targets for breast cancer treatment December 28, 2018 Source: Health News Network Author: Yang Qian Lu Jicai Recently, the Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has learned that the research team Chen Ceshi's research team found that the transcription factor KLF5 plays an important role in the development of breast cancer. Recently, the research paper was published in the Journal of Pathology. Previous studies have shown that KLF5 plays a key role in the self-renewal and maintenance of breast cancer stem cells, but the role of KLF5 in normal stem cells and mammary gland development has not been reported. Chen Ceshi's research team conducted an in-depth study on the role of KLF5 in normal breast stem cells and mammary gland development. Chen Ceshi introduced that they found that, firstly, the mammary gland development of mice with KLF5 knockout was significantly inhibited, especially during pregnancy and lactation. Secondly, the proportion of stem cells in the mammary gland of mice with KLF5 knockout was significantly decreased. The mechanism found that the knockdown of breast KLF5 caused the down-regulation of stem cell-associated factor Slug in breast cells, which led to the decrease of stem cells. Finally, using the PyMT oncogene carcinogenic model, it was found that breast KLF5 knockdown can significantly reduce oncogene-induced breast cancer production and growth. Chen Ceshi said that the study provides new supporting evidence for the exploration of KLF5 as a clinical breast cancer treatment target.
