According to the Russian News Network, the research team at the University of Information Technology, Mechanical and Optical University in St. Petersburg has developed special nano-particles that can deliver hemostatic drugs to the internal blood vessel damage under the control of a magnetic field, and play a role in stopping bleeding. The research results were published in the academic journals of Scientific Reports.

In terms of its composition, the nanoparticles developed contain two key components: the first is thrombin, which acts as a fibrinogen dissolved in plasma to form a blood clot to block vascular damage; The kind is a magnet-based special loose material, which plays a coating role to carry thrombin and can be moved in the human body under the action of an external magnetic field.

The production of magnetron nanoparticles has strict technical requirements. Firstly, the particle size cannot exceed 200 nm, otherwise it is not suitable for injection. Secondly, the activity of thrombin cannot be destroyed during the synthesis of nanoparticles. Finally, biocompatible materials are needed.

Human plasma experiments have shown that magnetic nanoparticles loaded with thrombin have very low activity and do not cause large-area coagulation of blood in blood vessels. After intravenous injection into the blood vessel, the nanoparticles concentrate on the vascular injury under the guidance of the magnetic field to exert the hemostatic effect. When the appropriate amount of fibrinogen is injected, the hemostasis effect is better. Although the nanoparticles reduce the activity of thrombin to some extent, the concentration of the nanoparticles by the magnetic field compensates for the decrease in activity. As a result, the nanoparticles shorten the clotting time by more than six times, and correspondingly reduce the blood loss to one-fifth. Toxicological tests have shown that the material does not cause any harm to human cells.

The research is part of the major project of “Developing Nano-Hybrid Hemostatic Materials”. Researchers will conduct animal experiments and clinical trials. The ultimate goal is to develop magnetically controlled nano-agents that can be used for rapid hemostasis in human body.

Hemorrhage in the human body is the most common cause of traumatic death. The first priority of rescue is rapid hemostasis.
