cover story

The integrity of the epithelial tissue is critical to maintaining the function of many body systems. If the epithelial barrier is destroyed, it can cause allergies, infections or cancer metastasis. One of these allergies can cause eosinophilic esophagitis, making it very difficult for patients to eat. Researchers such as Nurit Azuz from the Children's Hospital Medical Center at the University of Cincinnati Medical School in the United States have found that serine protease (SPINK7) is relatively low in the examination of living tissue in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis. In vitro experiments have shown that inhibition of serine proteases destroys epithelial cells and promotes the production of inflammatory cytokines, which can be restored by treatment with broad-spectrum anti-apoptotic proteases. Studies have shown that serine protease inhibitors may contribute to the treatment of eosinophilic esophagitis.
