The full name of EMSA is Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay. Chinese is called gel migration experiment or electrophoretic mobility experiment. It is a common technique for studying the interaction between DNA and protein or RNA and protein, and can be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis.

This technique is based on the principle that DNA/protein or RNA/protein complexes have different mobility in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). First, the protein is bound to the end-labeled nucleic acid probe, and then the PAGE gel is used, and the protein-bound complex is slower than the unbound protein probe, so that it can be judged from the electrophoresis result of the PAGE gel. Whether the protein binds to a particular sequence or whether the sequence binds to a protein.
